Gamesland News: 22.11.13 – 29.11.13

News
– The PS4 was released today in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. It is coming to Japan sometime in February in 2014.
– We held the Gamesland awards for the first time over the past week. Bastion won the mobile game of the year, Pokémon X/Y won the Portable game of the year, and Disney Infinity won the Game of the Year. You can currently vote for your favourite game of the year here.
– The Sega Dreamcast celebrated it’s 15th birthday on Wednesday (well, it was originally released on that date in Japan). It seems that November is the month of console releases!

What I’m playing
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past came out on Saturday, so I got it. Probably my favourite game right now.
Bit Trip Saga on my 3DS, and I’ve mainly been playing Runner.

***Notice***
I go on holiday on Wednesday, and won’t be back until the start of the new year. So this site will not have any new content until a few days into the start of 2014. We’ll have a news update on Tuesday, and then we’ll have an update once I get back.
***End of Notice***

Tune in next Tuesday (3.12.13, the last 2013 update) for more news from the land of gaming.

Portable Game of the Year – Winner

The Portable Game of the Year winner for 2013 is…Pokémon X/Y!

Although I haven’t reviewed the game yet, I still really like it. It gives you a ton of Pokémon, including two starters and a Lucario (plus a Torchic if you get the game before January), has lots of different locations, and has changed the Pokémon formula for the better. The whole game has now moved fully into 3D character models, meaning that you can mlove diagonally, and your Pokémon will now actually move around the battlefield (well, slightly. They’ll always run back to their platform). You can ride around on certain Pokémon now (but only in certain areas), you have roller skates, and you can get a bike as always. The gyms feel refreshing, now actually having to do with the specialty of the gym. For example, the bug gym has a spiders web to run around on, and the rock one has rock-climbing walls. I was surprised at how diverse the locations are, and how there’s actually a fairly intriguing storyline behind it (it’s about rocks). There’s also shout-outs to previous games, with the two legendary Pokémon from Unova appearing as statues, and the professor having learnt in Sinnoh…Does that mean the professor was you from the Sinnoh region? It’s up to you. It doesn’t quite make use of the 3D like I’d hoped, with it only being used in certain locations and certain battles, but when it is on, it looks great. Sure, there’s a few framerate issues in battles with it on, but apart from that it’s great.

Portable Game of the Year – Nominees

Portable games are judged by gameplay and use of the console’s special abilities (such as 3D on a 3DS or the twin sticks on a Vita). Good Art, Sound, and a storyline are pluses, but not essential. The game with the best score may not win. Withour further ado, the nominees:

Pokémon X/Y (Yes, I haven’t reviewed it yet, but I’ve played it, so I know what it’s about)

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Some very tough choices here…

Urgent Message for Pokémon X and Y Players regarding game saves [update]

If you play Pokémon X and Y, you may want to know that saving in certain areas in Lumiose City will corrupt your game. The map below shows where you shouldn’t save.

20131019-195044.jpg
You want to avoid the areas highlighted in blue.

If you have saved your game in one of those highlighted areas though, there may be a possible fix. This Reddit Forum Post states that you may be able to recover you game if you follow the following steps:

Step 1: Load your game.
Step 2: As the game loads wait for the music to start.
Step 3: Mash the home button until it works.
Worked for me after about 5 minutes.

Nintendo have also stated that saving in a building (or a Pokémon Centre, for that matter) will not corrupt the save. They have also stated that they are working on a fix, but no time was given for the release date of the fix.

Remember to the share the word with everyone you know who is playing the game!

I sure hope this doesn’t affect what happens when I play the game…

Update: There’s now a fix on the e-shop, or if it spunds faster to you, you can scan these QR codes with the camera:

It should work across regions. No word on how big the update is, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t be more than a hundred megabytes.

Gamesland News: 11.10.13 – 19.10.13

News
– The PS4 exclusive Driveclub has been delayed until next year. The game also joins Watchdogs in the list of delayed titles.
Pokémon X and Pokémon Y were released globally last weekend.
– The new Skylanders game, Swap Force, was also released.
– It was stated by a Microsoft advertiser that the Kinect will be able to see if you are paying attention to ads while watching TV. No more information was given, however, leaving people to believe that Microsoft will have to ask users for permission before gathering data (unless it’s in the terms and conditions for the console).
– Computer processor maker Intel has stated that they are certain that Grand Theft Auto V will come to PC.
– The online petition to bring Grand Theft Auto V to PC has surpassed 600’000 signatures.
This Site has opened up a PS4 development kit to see what’s inside. It looks like you’ll be able to swap HDD’s relatively easily. The website is in German, so unless you’re a fluent reader, you’ll want to go to Google Translate or a different service to translate it.
– Starting tomorrow and lasting until next Sunday, it’s mobile week here at Gamesland. Each day, I’ll post a review of a mobile game that’s caught my attention. Some might be indie titles, others might be made by a big studio. Still, everyday I’ll have a review that celebrates the wonderful world of mobile gaming.

What I’m Playing
Tiny Death Star.
– The mobile games for next week.
– I’ve ordered Pokémon X online. Because I was away the week it came out, it was impossible to get a copy in-stores for a good price.
Mass Effect
Tomb Raider

Gamesland News: 28/09/13 – 04/10/13

News
– It was my birthday during the week, and I got a few new games, namely: Tomb Raider, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations. And no, my cake was not a lie.
Grand Theft Auto Online released to a very rocky start, with many users reporting that they were not able to connect to the servers
– Steam’s final announcement was the controller to their “Steam Machines”, called, rather imaginatively, the Steam Controller
– Tom Clancy died yesterday, age 66. Many videogames were based on his work, the most recent one being Splinter Cell: Blacklist. My condolences go to his family.

What I’m playing
– I finished Flower, but I’m planning to do a Journey: Collectors Edition review, with reviews with all the games included.
– I’ve been playing Tomb Raider as well.

What I’m excited about
Pokémon X and Pokémon Y

Questions? Feedback?
Q: How do I get free energy in Deer Hunter 2014?
A: You can’t. Sorry, but it’s impossible. You have to use the premium currency to get more energy.

Q: How do I get unlimited energy in Deer Hunter 2014?
A: Like the above question, that’s impossible as well. Sometimes I wish that there would be a one-time in-app purchase, and the energy bar disappears. Sadly, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen any time soon.

Q: How do I get to the deserted island in the Incredibles campaign in Disney Infinity?
A: Equip your hoverboard, grab the mayor, and move around for a bit to gather up speed (you need to gather speed to saty above the water for a long enough time) and then go off the pier and hust follow the small islands to the big deserted island. Then, to get back, just go around the island, gather up speed, then come back to the pier. Alternatively (I haven’t tried this yet, by I assume it’s possible), later on in the campaign, when you get the incredicopter, you can pick up the president and just fly to the island (like I said, that might not work. The first option was the way it was meant to be done).

Q: How many regions are in Deer Hunter 2014?
A: There’s three four. I thought there was three, buy I just checked and there’s another one that my game didn’t initially pick up. The regions are: Pacific Northwest, North Africa, British Columbia, and South Africa.

Any other questions or feedback? Leave them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them!

Update: the Half-Life 3 trademark turned out to be fake. I have removed the corresponding news article to avoid confusion. Sorry for the inconvenience, as now we all know that Half-Life 3 is not confirmed.
